Statement from the Board of Education on Commissioner Rosa’s decision

Late yesterday afternoon, the Board of Education learned that Commissioner Rosa has sustained an appeal brought by several District residents on behalf of their children, effectively seeking the reinstatement of the Board’s resolution of June 17, 2021, when the Board voted to retire the “Indians” nickname and imagery. The Commissioner had issued an earlier interim order to this effect. In sustaining the appeal, the Commissioner ordered the District to eliminate the use of its former team name, mascot and logo by July 1, 2022.

The Board is committed to maintaining transparency throughout this process and will provide an update to the community after it determines how to proceed on this matter.
