We Came, We Saw, We Ate Gelato!
Mr. Mooney led a group of 52 Cambridge Central Latin students, chaperones and parents on an intellectual and cultural odyssey to Italy during February break.
After landing in Rome, they headed southeast to Monte Cassino, an ancient, Benedictine monastery with majestic hilltop views, before arriving in Sorrento, on the shores of which the Sirens are said to have tempted Odysseus on his ship. Next, they took a boat to the picturesque island of Capri, where Emperor Tiberius owned a dozen villas. After a trip to the legendary ruins of Pompeii, the sojourners traveled north to Rome. There they explored some of the greatest monuments of world history, such as the Colosseum, the Forum, the Pantheon, Castel Sant’Angelo (Hadrian’s Tomb), the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Capitoline Museum, and the Catacombs of St. Callistus. Other highlights included eating at delightful Italian restaurants, wandering through the Piazza Navona in Rome, and having a gelato at the Trevi Fountain. From there they took a train to Florence, where they toured the Piazza della Signoria, the Ponte Vecchio, the Gates of Paradise and the Accademia, which features Michelangelo’s world-famous David.
Omnes Italiam amaverunt! (Everyone loved Italy!)
