Board of Education statement on court appeal

The district followed the appeal to yesterday’s oral arguments regarding the Indians nickname and imagery. The appeal was filed prior to the commissioner’s mandate regarding mascots across the state. While the mandate does factor into the district’s options, it does not negate the legal process.

Additionally, the appeal was filed by the previous Board of Education to maintain a commitment that was made to the community and local Native American families. The district is working to develop a curriculum that educates students on Native American culture, specifically focusing on the tribes and rich history of those who were native to the Cambridge valley.

The district and Board of Education will continue to work with its legal counsel to consider all options. The Board is also working with student leaders to gather additional information on this issue and is committed to developing a student-centered solution.
